The mother of two is Mexican American and is American by nationality. Her entire life has been an avid sportsperson. Gerina began playing golf when she was 15 years old. Gerina graduated from high school at Goddard High School. While in highschool, Gerina was the winner of the New Mexico golf state tournament. She was a volleyball player and participated in state championships. At the age of 2003, she enrolled at the University of Texas. While in her senior years she was a winner of every tournament which she participated in. While in her undergrad year, she received Conference USA's individual player of year, as well as UTEP's Female Athletic Champion of the Year.
